In November 2007 the LFP office received an attention-grabbing e-newsletter from Students Run Philly Style (SRPS): “Meet Anthony Whittington…” an inner-city teen who had gone from hanging with the wrong crowd to training for the Philadelphia marathon.
Strategic Communications
Project director Healther McDanel credits the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation strategic communications training for giving them insight on how to develop the campaign. “They helped us be very intentional about how we spread the word about Students Run Philly Style,” she says. “It helped me see that everyone does good work, but some people know how to tell it better than others—and it makes a difference. To survive you have to know how to tell your story well.”

All of SRPS’s funders and supporters received several brief, colorful e-messages with engaging photos of Anthony and links to more information about him and the whole program. McDanel reports that each e-mail prompted positive calls and replies.
